How Jack Langsford discovered his passion for Early Years – and built a career helping children become fearless learners
For Hook Lane Primary School's Early Years Lead, Jack Langsford, a career in education was shaped long before he stepped into a classroom.
Growing up, Jack's dad was the stay-at-home parent while his mum was the family's main breadwinner. Later, when his younger brother was born, a 14-year age gap meant Jack took on new responsibilities and discovered how much he enjoyed helping to care for and support younger children.
"Growing up with a younger sibling gave me new responsibilities, new roles and a new form of enjoyment," says Jack. "It's something I now feel very fortunate to have as my career."
Today, Jack leads Early Years at Hook Lane, where no two days are ever the same.
"A typical day involves music, laughter, challenge, questions, stories, opportunities for growing independence, more laughter and lots of fun through play," he says. "I like to wear bright colours, always smile and bring positive energy when I welcome the children and parents."
At the heart of Jack's approach is helping children become confident, curious and fearless learners.
"The first stage is being an enabler," he explains. "Children this age have amazing imaginations and need opportunities to explore and learn through play. Their efforts should be celebrated, and modelling excellence helps them visualise success."
As children grow in confidence, Jack introduces new challenges to encourage deeper thinking and problem-solving.
"I like to think of myself as a 'play disruptor'," he says. "I create problems for children to solve, provoke questions and encourage them to take risks, make decisions and learn through perseverance, either independently or with their peers."
For Jack, Early Years is about creating an environment where children feel safe, supported and excited to learn.
"Our school is a safe place where children can explore, play and challenge themselves in a fun and stimulating environment that helps them thrive and develop the skills they need for the future."
Having spent seven years at Hook Lane, Jack is proud to be part of a school community where staff are encouraged to grow and develop.
"I've grown immensely as a teacher, working alongside amazing teachers and teaching assistants, and supporting new teachers as they develop their practice," he says. "Most importantly, I've always felt valued, respected and heard, which has allowed me to bring my own individuality and personal touch to the school."
Looking ahead, Jack is excited for what the future holds.
"I look forward to many more wonderful years in the best job, at the best school."
