From newly qualified teacher to Headteacher – how 22 years at Hook Lane shaped Joy Sheekey’s leadership journey

When Joy Sheekey joined Hook Lane Primary School over 22 years ago, she was at the very start of her teaching career.

Still completing her PGCE, she called the school during her Easter break to arrange a visit – a moment that led directly to her first teaching role.

“I returned to the front desk and was immediately offered the job,” she recalls.

Over the years, Joy has grown through the school, taking on leadership roles and completing specialist training in mathematics.

She progressed to Deputy Headteacher in 2016 and became Headteacher in 2021.

“I just wanted to do my best for the children and keep learning and growing,” she says.

Today, she leads Hook Lane with a strong focus on culture, inclusion and learning without fear.
